Marcelo Vieira da Silva Junior

Known as Marcelo, his full name is Marcelo Vieira da Silva Junior. He was born on May 12, 1988. He is a left defender for the football team in Spain called the Real Madrid. He is also sometimes playing the position of left winger. He has been playing the game since he was 9 years old.

Many believe the game just comes naturally to him. However, he will admit that when he would practice on the field with the team he would also practice alone. He wanted to make sure he had everything he needed to be part of the game for the long term scheme of things.

The fact that he was very poor also played a role in him playing the game. His parents worked hard to keep him involved in football. They wanted Marcelo to get an education and to be able to enjoy the game. They also didn’t want to see him get mixed up in negative aspects of life. They felt that by keeping him active in positive things he could avoid those problems.

Marcelo joined Real Madrid

In 2007 Marcelo joined Real Madrid during the transfer window that January. One of the many reasons that this team wanted him was his young age. They also felt that he could offer some fresh approaches to their overall game plan. Part of their strategy was to get some younger players on the team so that they could take the place of older ones that would not be continuing with the team.

The other reason that Real Madrid wanted him is that it seemed at least half of the teams in Europe were very interested in Marcelo. They didn’t want to pass up such a gem and allow him to work his skills and abilities against them with one of their rival teams. They had the mentality that by taking this player off the market they could strengthen their advantages over other teams.

For the 2007 to 2008 season he was a starter in most of the games. It quickly became evident that Marcelo offered a speed that very few others were able to match. He also had the instincts for when to attack and when to just defend. That was something that really allowed the team to capitalize on certain mistakes of the other teams they were playing.

Marcelo Performance

Marcelo seemed to have a natural talent for identifying when there were such changes that he could make. Being able to come in with big plays on a regular basis made him a favorite with the Real Madrid fans. The rival teams also quickly learned they had to watch out for him or they would end up giving up points on the field.

Yet over time it seemed that the performance of Marcelo started to diminish. By 2009 he found that he was no longer in the starting position for Real Madrid. Gabriel Heinze was taking over as the starter. When he did get some play time he was once again doing very well. That earned him the starting role of striker once again for the team.

For the 2010 to 2011 season though he is back in the position of left back. This decision was made by the new coach, Jose Mourinho. He has the confidence of the coach and his team. He also has his self confidence and has done a tremendous job so far in this season. In November of 2010 Marcelo was named as one of the 55 players for the FIFA World XI. This is a telling sign that his days of glory in this game are far from over.
