Iker Casillas

Iker Casillas is a player for the Real Madrid football team as a goalkeeper. He was born May 20, 1981. He has been a true asset and inspiration to the team on many levels. The fact that Iker Casillas is an exceptional goalkeeper has helped his team to win a world Cup. He started playing the game in 1990 and quickly moved up the ranks due to his skills and personality.

At the age of 16 in 1997 Iker Casillas was added to the UEFA Champions League. The following year he was the senior goalkeeper for the game. In 2000 he became the youngest goalkeeper ever to play in the Champions League final game. He helped Real Madrid to win over Valencia. Iker Casillas was only 19 years of age at that time. Yet he was able to keep his poise about him the entire time.

Iker Casillas is also the captain of the teams- both the Spanish National Team and Real Madrid. In 2010 it was under his leadership that his team won the FIFA World Cup for the first time in their history. Iker Casillas was also honored with the Golden Glove which goes to the best goalkeeper of the tournament. He was very happy with that award but felt that the entire team is deserving of the effort they put into the season to earn the win.

For the 2007 to 2008 season Iker Casillas did wonders for the Real Madrid team. They were able to win the La Liga title which was the 31st time that the time had done so. They also earned the Zamora Trophy for the lowest amount of goals for the season of all the teams. They only allowed a total of 32 goals out of 36 games. That just goes to show you how great Iker Casillas is in the role of goalkeeper.

He is often stated to be one of the best goalkeepers in the game. There are very few awards that Iker Casillas hasn’t has the honor of earning in Europe as a goalkeeper. In 2009 he was voted into the UEFA Team of the Year – the third year in a row for him to do so. In 2010 he was noted to be the most capped goalkeeper of all time by the UEFA Champions League.

Iker Casillas has signed a contract that binds him to the Real Madrid football team until 2017. That contract has a stipulation that it will be automatically extended if he plays 30 competitive matches during the final season of the contract. The fact that his overall performances so far have just earned him a spot on the UEFA Team of the Year for the second time means that we can continue to expect wonderful things from him and from the Real Madrid team.
